John Freud retired to the Hill Country in 2009 and took up professional landscape photography in 2016. About the same time, he joined the board of directors for The Cibolo Center for Conservation in Boerne, became the board President and was instrumental in recruiting its second CEO in 36 years of existence. He is committed to land and water conservation and co-produced a table book, Replenishing Our Hills, published by Texas A&M University Press in July 2024. Over 60% of the first edition has been sold.
